Friction Stir Processing established
a process for inducing directed, localized, and
controlled materials properties in any arbitrary
location and pattern to achieve revolutionary
capability in high value-added components.
The objectives of the Friction Stir Processing
(FSP) Program were to (1) establish practical
processing windows for thick sections castings
and fusion weldment modification and (2) demonstrate
reproducible and substantially improved mechanical,
corrosion, and formability properties. Specifically,
the program established means and procedures
so that Friction Stir Processing will result
in a DoD capability to achieve increased performance
in high-value articles. |
