Terms of Use

Welcome! The collaborative forums on this site are intended to serve as an open, healthy, and respectful environment where members are free to share ideas and engage in discussions or debate. By participating in these forums you agree to abide by the rules and guidelines stated here.

The rules and guidelines stated here apply to all forums, as well as any links. When in doubt, please consult our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. To ensure that all users have a positive experience, we have established some basic rules and guidelines. DARPA may revise these Terms of Use at any time by posting an updated version to this website.

1. Decorum

Please be courteous to the other users and do not engage in personal attacks or ad hominem arguments. All participants deserve to be treated with integrity and their opinions heard. All criticism, whether of another participant's opinion, design, image, video, post, etc. must be expressed in a constructive manner. Humor in response to threads is encouraged, but be sure that it contributes to the thread's technical merit and is not a stand-alone post. Negative posts/comments about another participant's post are prohibited. Flaming (the act of posting messages primarily to aggravate and upset others) and trolling (the act of sending messages with the intent of provoking angry responses) are also prohibited.

2. Language

All verbal or written messages must be expressed in English. People of many different backgrounds, ages, and sensibilities are part of the Shredder Challenge, so we request that you tailor your wording for the widest readability without sacrificing content. In all events, use of vulgarity, obscenity, profanity, ethnic slurs, hate speech (in short, language used to degrade or intimidate a person based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, economic status, language, religion, or disability), or sexually explicit language is prohibited. Do not bait, harass, abuse, or threaten the other users; do not libel or defame others. Using "creative" spelling in order to circumvent the rules will not be tolerated. Such behaviors may warrant the removal of the transgressor from further participation in the Shredder Challenge.

3. Laws

You must not violate any international, national, federal, state, or local laws while participating in this forum, or use access to this forum for any illegal purpose.

4. Copyright and Other Rights

Do not transmit, upload, or link to any content that you do not own or have the permission of the content's owner to post it or transmit (including any information, editorial content, graphics, photos, designs, text, programs, files, software, or other materials). Preserve the intellectual property of others as strongly as you protect your own. Users may post links to commonly used Web sites (e.g., YouTube™) that are of relevance to a discussion; however, the external links must abide by the guidelines set forth by this site.

5. Forum Discussions

The messages and ideas posted to the Shredder Challenge discussion forums express the views of the author and not necessarily that of the U.S. Government, DARPA, or the Department of Defense. You agree that you will not use the forums to post any statement which is knowingly false, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, graphic, threatening, or invasive to a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of any law. Slanderous or defamatory statements are prohibited. Before starting a new thread, check to see if there is already a discussion on that topic within the last week or so. If there is, please post in that discussion. As always, common sense and respect for the other participants should be your guide. In the end, we reserve the right to remove, without notice, any post for any reason whatsoever.

6. Advertising and Spam

No advertising, trading of goods or services, or other commercial use is allowed, except in those areas in which those activities are expressly permitted. No spam, chain letters, files or programs designed to interrupt, destroy, or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware equipment; or repeat postings of the same messages are permitted. Cross-posting in this forum is prohibited.

7. Images

If you submit an image, please make sure that it is appropriate for the discussion. Do not submit images that would normally be considered inappropriate for young children, or considered to be offensive to anyone because of religion, gender, sexual orientation, race, national origin, ethnicity, age, or disability.

8. Complaints

To report violations of the forum rules and guidelines or other objectionable behavior or material, please contact the Shredder Challenge webmaster: ShredderChallenge@darpa.mil

9. Display Name and Password

As part of the registration process, you will be asked to select a unique login name and password. You may not use a login name of another user. You may not disclose or share your password to any third parties or use your password for any unauthorized purposes. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password. An individual may only register as a single user with a single username. Usernames cannot be offensive and must be consistent with the decorum as outlined in the forum rules and guidelines.

10. Legal Disclaimer

Your registration and use of this site is bound by the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. The Shredder Challenge Web site is not responsible for the contents of any posts. You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for the content of your information, postings, or proposed solutions and that the Shredder Challenge Web site merely acts as a conduit for the distribution of that information and submission of challenge solutions. By accessing and using this site, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, violate any of the listed additional rules, or otherwise violate any other laws. You further agree, by your continued use of this forum, that you have understood and will comply with these guidelines. You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by this forum. Information or files, once posted on the forums or profiles, becomes property of the site. Any actions that are considered misuse, abuse, inappropriate, or a violation of these rules may result in suspension of your posting privileges, removal from the Challenge, and/or the removal of the inappropriate content.
