Privacy Act Statement


The Shredder Challenge competition that you are registering for is supported by, and conducted on behalf of, a Federal government agency within the Department of Defense (DoD). As part of the registration process you are asked to furnish personally identifiable information (PII) about yourself that will be specifically available to the DoD, potentially maintained in a database, and therefore subject to protection under the Privacy Act of 1974 and applicable DoD regulations. In accordance therewith, the following Privacy Act Statement is a required notification to you prior to the collection of your PII. Please read it carefully:

AUTHORITY: 10 U.S.C. 133, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisitions, Technology and Logistics; 10 U.S.C. 2374a, Prizes for Advanced Technology Achievements; 15 U.S.C. 3701 et. seq., Stevenson-Wydler Technology Innovation Act of 1980, (as amended, Prize Competitions); and, E.O. 9397 (as amended, SSN).

PURPOSE: To collect, assemble, interpret, analyze, report and publish research, study, statistical and informational data, in order to identify the fastest techniques for the reconstruction of shredded, handwritten paper documents. Uses of personally identifiable data may include secondary analysis and cross-mapping analysis however such data will only be used in the aggregate and will not be linked or linkable to an individual except as permitted and/or required by law.

ROUTINE USES: In addition to those disclosures generally permitted under 5 U.S.C. 552a(b) of the Privacy Act of 1974, these records may specifically be disclosed outside the DoD as a routine use pursuant to the DoD Blanket Routine Uses available at http://privacy.defense.gov/blanket_uses.shtml

DISCLOSURES: Providing your PII is voluntary, however a failure to provide will result in non-registration for the Shredder Challenge competition and otherwise disqualify you from participation.
