The DARPA Robotics Challenge is a program focused on human-scaled robotics for humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions. The Trials, held December 20-21, 2013 in Homestead, Florida, is the first of two physical demonstration events that are planned. Eight (8) of the top teams were selected to continue to receive DARPA funding and invited to attend the DARPA Robotics Finals in December 2014 and compete, along with self-funded teams, for a $2 million prize.

The event featured a number of robots from around the world performing human tasks in eight simulated disaster response scenarios.

Notice: At the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials, equipment will be used to photograph, record video and sound, and film footage in connection with the production of documentary content by third-party producer(s).  In addition to this notice, conspicuous notice of photography, video recording, and filming will be provided at the event.  Your presence at the event is an acknowledgment that you have been informed that you may be photographed, video recorded, and filmed; and, that you grant permission for your likeness and voice to be used without compensation, credit, or other consideration in any media now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity and throughout the universe, to include the advertising and publicity thereof.  If you do not wish to be subject to the foregoing, please do not attend the event.

The On-site experience

DRC FACT SHEET

DARPA will provide a full range of resources to make the most of their experience.

Seating and access areas – Spectators will get a view of the action from seats above team garages in the infield, in close proximity to seven of the task areas. Grandstands will facilitate viewing to the driving task. A public address announcer will keep viewers continually updated on the competition.

Jumbotrons/Televisions – During the event, video from team’s robots attempting to complete the eight task will appear on two strategically-placed Jumbotrons. In addition, plasma screens near each task will provide quad-screen closeups of each of the robots.

Trials Website – Live streaming and highlights from the Trials event will be posted periodically on both December 20 and 21st on www.theroboticschallenge.org as well as the DARPATV channel on YouTube.

Exhibit Area – Explore the DRC Exposition showcasing technology related to disaster response, robotics and autonomy, including a demonstration of DARPA’s “Wild Cat”

Speedway Facilities – Vendors will be on-site to sell food and beverages to spectators. There also will be parking and restrooms on the grounds for spectators. There is no charge for parking.
