Team Description* The Virginia Tech Grand Challenge Team is composed of undergraduate and graduate students working with three faculty advisors and a dedicated group of sponsoring organizations. Most of the students on the team are using the Grand Challenge experience to satisfy technical elective or senior design project requirements. “The Grand Challenge offers students an extraordinary opportunity to work in a team environment on one of the great problems in modem engineering,” said team leader and faculty advisor Charles Reinholtz. “They earn course credit, but they motivated more by their passion for the project than they are for a good grade.”

The Virginia Tech team competed in the first DARPA challenge in 2004 and qualified as the fifth seed overall. The team’s approach is to develop a relatively small, highly maneuverable vehicle that has the sensors and intelligence to stay on the course and avoid obstacles. The sensor suite includes LADAR, radar, stereo vision, monocular vision, Differential GPS and inertial measurement systems.

Sponsors* The Virginia Tech College of Engineering, Virginia Tech Department of Mechanical Engineering, Lab View Technical Resources, Ingersoll-Rand Club Car Division,
Intermap Technologies, Power One, NovAtel, Quicksilver Technology, North American Signal Company, Enercorp, Bodine Electric, Ford, National Instruments, General Motors, Michelin, Goodyear, Advance Motion Controls, Sensytech, Honeywell, and
Omnistar.
