The MITRE Meteorites
Vehicle Name The Meteor
Team E-mail
Location McLean, VA
Team Description* The MITRE Meteorites are a team of engineering professionals working in robotics, signal processing, software and systems. Their efforts are largely sponsored by The MITRE Corporation, a not-for-profit national resource that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. The MITRE Meteor, a modified Ford Explorer Sport Trac, will be equipped with off-road upgrades, decked out with sensor and navigation technology, and embedded with the latest in computer hardware, software, and control systems.

The team has two philosophies--”Keep it Simple” and “Do what we do well, farm out the rest”—as it strives to meet the technical, environmental, and schedule challenges of this event. The Meteorites plan to maintain tight development and test cycles, showing incremental progress and building upon past successes in rapid fashion. Where possible, the team will use robust, proven equipment from leading technology providers, leaving the team to focus on the challenges of overall architecture development, system integration, sensor fusion, and system control.

In addition, the Meteorites will draw on the expertise of colleagues within MITRE. Among the principal team contributors are MITRE robotics staff who received a Technical Innovation Award and placed second overall in the Robot Rescue Competition at the National Conference on Artificial Intelligence. During the full scope of this event it’s expected that participation will include a wide range of MITRE employees with a broad array of experiences and disciplines.

The Meteorites are grateful for the support they have received from a growing list of additional sponsors that include SuperLift, EMC, ACT/Technico, Hybricon, and Concurrent Technologies. The team gives special thanks to West Group for providing initial vehicle testing space.
